Resurrecting The Bone Fairy
Much like one of the characters in The Bone Fairy, the manuscript itself is the result of an unexpected resurrection. I started writing the story just under six years ago and I can be that precise because it was inspired by a trip to the dentist. True story.
On the 23rd December 2020, amidst the chaos of a pandemic, I developed the worst toothache ever and ended up having an emergency extraction on Christmas Eve. I do not recommend this. However, one bright spark from my anaesthetic-induced haze was a strange fascination with the fact that, according to the dentist, fragments of the tooth might erupt from my gum over the coming days if they hadn’t managed to retrieve the whole thing.
Somewhere along the line, that thought turned into wondering about bone fragments, forgotten bones, and how many bodies might be lying unseen at the bottom of lakes. Yes, like many romantasy authors, I’m a dark soul at heart. And thus Bone Fairy was born: the structure, the characters, the magic it all arrived at once, and luckily I had the foresight to get it written down.
Unfortunately, despite having the entire plot mapped out, I lost my way in the muddy middle. But it’s one of those stories that never really left me. The characters stayed vivid enough that I knew I’d come back to them eventually and a few months ago, I finally did. Suddenly, that muddy middle fell into place.
I’m now on my second round of edits and genuinely excited to bring this world fully to life and see what people think of it. I’ll be documenting the journey here on the blog and across my socials, so if you’re interested, do stick around and stay up to date.
